Regional anesthesia can be used alone or combined with sedation. as well as general anesthesia in order to provide the anesthetic. Additionally, regional anesthesia usually provides for a prolonged period of superior pain control (analgesia). Depending on the method used, this pain control can sometimes be extended up to seven days.
